Berlin

Introduce yourself? Pronouns? Where do you currently reside?

Hii my name is Soyoon, pronouns she/whatever. Born and raised in Seoul but been living in Berlin since 2015.

What is the best snack you ate in the last week in full detail?

This pork bun and shumai I ate on the Shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo.. was so juicy and sweet, heavenly paired with the Japanese mustard.

3 adjectives that start with the same letter to describe your dog?

Weird, wow, woof..

What is the punishing thing you can ask a DJ after their set?

This dude came after me as soon as I stepped out of the booth saying he loved the set and he’s a dj too. Following question: “How did you get famous? Is it because of your dj name?”💀 Thought you just said you liked what you heard 🙁

If you had to soundtrack someone being born…what is the first track that you would play?

Idk honestly really terrible music that makes you wanna crawl straight back into the womb but that doesnt work so i should play something extremely chill so it somehow helps this baby to grow as a chill nice human

What was the first gig you played and how did it go?

I think it was 2014 Seoul, me and a group of my somewhat creative friends just decided to throw a party so we can play music and do stuff. Our friends who had a bar called Pingpong Pub(RIP) in Itaewon let us use their space. Nobody knew how to dj, nobody knew how to do anything lol. We did one overnight Traktor workshop day before the party helping each other and then somehow it went ok??

But of course I wanted to play the emotional “closing set” and by the time I started everyone left except our friends lol. It was apparently too late for Seoul fashun ppl..

Funnily enough I got reminded of that very set recently at my gig on NYD. I heard the last track of that set whilst I was puking outside during XDB’s set at the party lol. Of course I couldn’t remember what it was but I knew I played it somewhere. And after a couple days of obsessive search in my brain it finally came to me. My first ever closer! It’s still a beautiful track. Maybe one day I’ll close my set with it.

Listen to the moment at 22:22 min mark in your PI mix… describe how it makes you feel?

Makes me wanna fake breakdance and miss my friend Lucas Reptant who made the track.

Favorite track off the first CD you got as a child?

I asked all the members of Imaginary Friend to ask you a question… anonymously… here they are:

IF member #1: Fuck Marry Kill: Greggs Steak Bake, Olivios Gnocci Hawaii, Tony Romas Chicken Lollipop

Tough one.. despite tasting like dog food- steak bake is at least the steady seller at greggs so marry steak bake.. fuck olivio gnocci hawaii because I honestly fuck with it even though it looks like this

Kill Tony fucking Roma’s chicken lollipop at any cost its what gave me and my 9 friends group food poisoning on my birthday last year lol. Bonding experience though. Did we need it? No.

IF member #2: Imagine a rich and delicious sandwich of your choice. unfortunately you die of dehydration before you get to eat it but you will be reborn as an ingredient in this sandwich that the gods let you choose.  What’s the sandwich and which ingredient will it be?

I love a well balanced sandwich.. Ham & cheese & lettuce sandwich at the japanese seven eleven needs an honorable mention here but then for this one I am going for Izmir’s Köfte sandwich in Berlin. It is the real king of balance imo… i wanna be that one piece of radish in the sandwich that adds a perfect crunch, maybe it will be a bit pickled if i died of dehydration.

IF member #3 When will you stop procrastinating?

…..

Let’s play a pi pi pi game… I give you a situation & you give me a track (youtube links plz)

Tell me about this mix…

This mix is actually a revival of one of my favourite memories from 2024. At the very end of 2023, I was lucky enough to participate in a lovely new festival my friend Kia and Kasun organised with their crew in the Australian bush near Melbourne. It was my first time down under as well as my first time in bush doof- I loved it! The whole time I got to spend there was so cute and wholesome as I expected. It holds a special place in my heart and I really enjoyed preparing and playing this set that I decided to immortalise it. It wasn’t recorded at the time so after a year I finally re-recorded it at home with the same tracks (except for one unreleased Stones Taro tune that goes with so well I had to slide that in). It’s a bit longer than the 2 hours slot I played at the fest, new year new me more patience and slower pacing- interesting development.

I closed the main stage from 1-3am on NYD after the wonderful Nat Salih and Ricci, before we all rolled over to the house party to go crazy at LOIF’s absolutely bonkers set. About a month prior to the festival, Kia sent me a dropbox link with some pictures of the site, so I imagined the bush doof based on those pics and started digging for music that would fit the setting. Bush doof, 1-3am, by the lake, moonlight and friends are some keywords from my note.

I had a few tracks immediately popping up in my head for this, actually some tracks I never been able to place anywhere else, I wanted to build the set around them.

Slinky Wire – Croaking Toads [2007]

I wanted the earlier section of the set to suit the deranged fun vibe of celebrating new years. Never been to a bush doof before but in my head somehow this almost-psy-leaning froggy german minimal felt like it could be something close to the sound what people are used to in the doof raves but not really lol. One thing I was sure was though that this would cause some positive disruption on the dancefloor. And the lake was actually full of banjo frogs (aka pobble-bonk) not toads. They sound incredible.

2 Dollar Egg – Mellow Tunis [2001]

Jan Gabler – Easy Delight (Amt Für Apokalyptisches Mix) [2000]

I made a playlist called ‘moonlight dance’ for this set, for me they tend to sound quite nostalgic, introspective and cute. I wanted to get to that point towards the end of the set as some kind of collective wind-down after exploring darker and heavier sounds. Basically I just  imagined my friends bopping their heads under the moonlight to this music 🙂

Obviously I can’t talk about all the tracks here but I could go on forever so I stop now. Quite a few of them I never played out of this set because I didn’t want to alter the relationship I have with those tracks and this specific memory. Hope you enjoy and shoutout to the un:send team for this beautiful time!
